GRASS WIDOW / RANK/XEROX SPLIT CS

The Grass Widow side is pretty hit or miss for me. I've never really given a proper listen to there other material and wasn't too into it at the time but I gotta say their cover of "Black Hole" by the Urinals kills, as does the final track, "uncertain memory". If the Urinals cover wasn't enough of a tip-off, this is art punk, which can come with some pretty awful quirks. the third track for instance is some a cappella bullshit. Thankfully Rank/Xerox tears it up on the b-side. I saw them open for Face The Rail in Richmond a few months ago and, having been a huge post-punk nerd for almost half of my life, they blew me out of the water. Unfortunately nobody else at the show really gave a shit. Fer fans of Josef K, Gang of Four, Saccharine Trust. hititupfools

Holiday - Magnetic Fields

i could never get into "i" or "69 love songs" or anything else by them but i think this is one of the best synth pop albums i've ever heard. there are strange lyrics and hooks all over the place that consistently catch me off guard although i've probably listened to it a thousand times. These are love songs written by a lonely dude with a vivid imagination.

Insubordinates LP/Demo

The demo is weirdo hardcore. The LP is a sci/fi surf punk record if such a thing exists. surf instrumental "Nagasaki" starts the record off with some 60's worship and includes a horn section. "Outer Limits" reminds me of b-movies and hp lovecraft. This ones for the nerds.

YADOKAI EP/STERILE ENVIRONMENT

sf punks playing pummeling japanese influenced hardcore. members of ecoli/basically all the good bay area bands. i didn't know what to think of them after i heard their demo, which is basically an assault of some of the weirdest riffs and most aggressively noisy guitars i'd heard in while, but the EP kind of consolidates all that in a really great way. anyway here's both. demo. EP.
